They have pledged to donate $1 million to oncopediatrics at Hôpital Fleurimont over the next 3 years. The announcement was made at an in-house event held this weekend in Valcourt.
Mr. Daniel Martin, General Manager of Operations at BRP, assures us that the employees who have been participating in the CHUS Foundation source deduction program for several years are very proud.
"Research is making progress in discovering new treatments for cancer, and our young patients need to be able to benefit from them quickly. We are pleased and proud to contribute to improving the care available here."
The employees have just completed their first fundraising campaign, also from
1 million, starting in 2019. Thanks to this very important support, childhood cancer treatment has made a huge leap forward at Hôpital Fleurimont, and 95% of children are fully treated in the Eastern Townships, compared with 25% before 2018.
"We have been able to consolidate our team and accelerate the opening of numerous research protocols, which favors patient retention in their region for all care. In fact, we have seen a very significant increase in the number of new patients diagnosed and treated at CHUS Fleurimont over the past 2 years, with already 25 new cases since the start of 2023 compared to 31 per year in 2021 and 2022."
explains Dr. Josée Brossard, Head of the Hemato-Oncology Department at CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS. More than 2,600 appointments and 1,000 chemotherapy treatments were administered in 2022-23, representing a 170% increase over the previous year.
This new $1 million commitment will enable the pediatric oncology team to enhance its research activities and collaborate with all the experts involved in national and international consortia.
"I can only add a huge thank you to all BRP employees who have this cause tattooed on their hearts. This great contribution gives hope to the families living with this terrible diagnosis for their child. It's so reassuring to see this wonderful mobilization to increase their chances of recovery.
says Martin Clermont, Executive Director of the CHUS Foundation.
